This study examines the concept of nation and nationalism within historical, sociological, and Islamic perspectives. Nationalism is not confined to racial or geographical boundaries; rather, it is a multidimensional phenomenon shaped by language, culture, religion, and shared history. In Islamic thought, nationalism is envisioned as the formation of a community grounded in faith, brotherhood, justice, and equality. The Qur’an and the Sunnah emphasize that true collective identity lies in obedience to Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him), transcending ethnic and linguistic divisions.
In the context of Pakistan, the question of nationalism assumes particular significance, as the country represents a multi-cultural and multi-lingual society where diverse ethnic groups coexist. While this plurality presents challenges for national cohesion, Islamic principles provide a framework capable of transforming such diversity into unity. Drawing upon the insights of scholars and a range of academic works, this study explores different dimensions of nationalism and highlights the pivotal role of Islamic teachings in nation-building. The findings suggest that Islam not only offers an ideological foundation for the construction of a collective identity but also practical guidance for fostering an integrated and united nation. Consequently, Pakistan’s multicultural composition, if grounded in Islamic principles, can serve as a source of national harmony and sustainable development.
